| Donald Voiles Wolfley, age 93, of the Pittsfield Manor in Pittsfield, Il. and formerly of Griggsville, Il. died early Saturday morning (January 9, 2010) at the Manor. He was born July 17, 1916 in Carrollton, Il. son of the late Hubert and Helen Voiles Wolfley. He married Dorothy Rose Shinn on May 6, 1939 in Champaign, Il. and she preceded him in death on December 2, 2006. Surviving is a son, Lawrence Wolfley of California; grandsons, Lyle Wolfley of California, David Wolfley of Michigan and Daniel Wolfley of Wisconsin; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a son Donald Wolfley, Jr. Donald grew up in Greene County, Il., raised in the extended farm family of his beloved grandmother Cora Voiles Logan, while his mother worked in St. Louis. He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana for four years but did not take a degree. There he met and married Rose Shinn of Griggsville, Il. After a college stint in the Illinois National Guard, in 1939 he went to work in the first of several dairy plant jobs, first in Peoria, where Lawrence was born, and then Chicago. For health and other reasons, he was not drafted into the service, and these dairy jobs, an essential industry in wartime, carried him through W.W. II. After the war he left the Chicago area and moved back to Greene County, where he worked until 1949 for a government agency teaching the latest farming methods to farmer veterans returning from the war. In 1950 he moved to his wife’s hometown, Griggsville, and started Wolfley’s Agricultural Service. He provided to the farmers of the area the fertilizers, seeds, and chemicals they used to grow their crops. His business was an essential part of the local economy, employing many local people over the years, until his retirement in 1994. Donald in his middle years particularly enjoyed boating and dining out with his many friends. He and Rose enjoyed dancing well into their later years. It sometimes seemed that Donald knew everyone in Pike County, and in turn he was surely known and liked by thousands. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday (January 14, 2010) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Il. A private service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Griggsville Library or to the Griggsville United Methodist Church both c/o Airsman-Hires Chapel, Box 341 Griggsville, Il. 62340. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.airsman-hires.com | |||||
