John W. Cully, 82, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, February 11, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born July 12, 1927, in Morgan County, the son of William Arthur and Mildred Morris Cully. Mr. Cully is survived by two sisters, Mary Anne (deceased husband, Raymond) Maul of Jacksonville and Susie (husband, Gary) Sarff of Easton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Arthur Cully (surviving wife Mary of Jacksonville.) Mr. Cully was a 1944 graduate of Jacksonville High School. He attended Illinois College for two years before entering the United States Army, where he served in the medical corps for two years. He returned to Illinois College and graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors in 1950. While a student at Illinois College, Mr. Cully was on the Illinois College Rambler staff and active as a Hilltopper. He continued his studies at Columbia University in New York. Fluent in five languages, Mr. Cully worked as an interpreter for the airlines during that time. He attended the University of California- Berkeley and earned his Masters of Library Science degree in 1959. He was Senior Librarian at the California State Library in Sacramento, where he was head of the patent department. Following his retirement, Mr. Cully returned to Jacksonville, where he enjoyed reading, music, gardening and flowers. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2010, at Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Family will meet friends from 12 Noon until 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the Jacksonville Symphony Society.
