Joseph H. Schmidt, 88, of Carrollton died on Thursday Feb. 25, 2010 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville. Born in Carrollton on April 26, 1921, he was the son of the late Henry and Anna Meyer Schmidt. He married the former Doris Mae Hartman on Sept. 25, 1947 in Carrollton and she preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 2008. Surviving are 4 daughters: Phyllis (husband George) Didier of Rockford, Janet (husband Jim) Maggart of Ava, Diane (husband Paul) Meyer of St. Peters, MO, Debbie (husband Todd) Dunlap of Carrollton, 6 sons: Donald (wife Pam) Schmidt of Collinsville, Fr. David Schmidt of St. Louis, MO, Jim (wife Arlene) Schmidt of Normal, Dennis (wife Annette) Schmidt of Carrollton, Jerry (wife Sue) Schmidt of Quincy, Dan (wife Sarah) Schmidt of Carrollton, 21 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 sister: Sister Henry Ann Schmidt of Aurora, 4 brothers: Fred (Naomi) Schmidt of Carrollton, John Schmidt of Carrollton, Charles (Anna Mae) Schmidt of Carrollton, Fr. Henry Schmidt of Carrollton. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter Joan B. Schmidt, a grandchild: Justin Michael Schmidt and a brother Bob Schmidt. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WW II and Korea. He belonged to the Greene Co. Farm Bureau, the Knights of Columbus (4th Degree), Holy Name Society, the Carrollton American Legion and St. John’s Catholic Church. Mr. Schmidt was a lifelong farmer whose love of farming was exceeded only by the love of his family. Visitation will be from 4-8 on Friday Feb. 26, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton. Mass will be celebrated at 10 A.M. on Saturday Feb. 27 at the church with burial to follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to: St. John’s School of for Masses.
