Melvin L. Becker, 89, of Carrollton died on Wednesday evening Aug. 1, 2012 at Willow Rose Care Center in Jerseyville. Born in Greene County on May 20, 1923, he was the son of the late Lewis and Adelaide Pranger Becker. He married the former Mary Margaret Schroeder on Jan. 28, 1948 at St. Francis Church in Jerseyville and she preceded him in death on March 21, 2011. Surviving are 2 daughters: Martha (husband Mike) Sheehan of Jacksonville, Elizabeth Becker of Springfield, 3 sons: Henry (wife Brenda) Becker of Jacksonville, Michael (wife Janet) Becker and Gregory Becker of Carrollton. Three grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 3 sisters: Evelyn (Lloyd) Henneghan of Jerseyville, Mary Lois Rawe of Springfield, Sister Helen Becker of Springfield, a brother Charles (wife Gertrude) Becker of Springfield and a brother-in-law: James Miller of Springfield also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a sister Marjean Miller and a brother Robert Becker. Melvin was a lifelong farmer, member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, and the Greene Co. Farm Bureau. He was a longtime blood donor, having donated more than 11.5 gallons during his life. Visitation will be from 3-6 P.M. on Sunday Aug. 5, 2012 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10 A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be left online at: www.airsman-hires.com.
