William J. “Billy Joe” Treat, age 92, of Bentley Village in Naples, Florida, passed away on August 11, 2012, at 9 p.m. at the Avow Hospice Center in Naples, Florida. He was born June 26, 1920 in Springfield, Il. He was the fourth son of Quincy and Lonely Nevius Treat and was a descendent of several Sangamon County pioneer families. He married Mary Margaret Triplett from Barry, Illinois, on May 29, 1950 in Palmyra, Mo. She preceded him in death on December 4, 2006. There were no children from this union. Mr. Treat graduated from Ball Township High School and from Eastern Illinois University in 1942. As a student at Eastern Illinois University, he became one of the universities finest baseball pitchers. From there he went to the U.S. Army for four years and was a WWII veteran. After he got out of the service he went to the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado and received his Masters Degree. While there he played baseball for the Colorado Eagles and the Coors Brewery. He then became a teacher and taught in Murrayville, Franklin and later retired from teaching in the Springfield schools in 1975. After his retirement, he had a great passion for golf. They moved to Florida permanently in 2001. Mr. Treat was a member of the Masons and the Ansar Shrine in Springfield, Illinois. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. As per his wishes, there will be no services. His ashes and his wife’s ashes will be interred at a later date in Campbell Cemetery in Loami, Il. Joe was one of the nicest gentlemen we ever had the privilege to know and do business with. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will be missed.

Mr. Treat was my favorite math teacher at Franklin Junior High School in Springfield, IL. He challenged all of us in class but made math fun. He was one of the rare teachers that taught us that we could accomplish great things if we truly applied our skills. Thanks for all you did for us Mr. Treat.

My mother and father(Bud and Mary Alice Krell) always spoke highly of Billy Joe. They went to Ball and graduated with him. They always looked forward to their re-unions. I bet there having a great one now. God Bless, Tim E. Krell
